SUMMARY:RCAS Meeting with Historian Robbie D. Jones on 'Civil Rights March Routes as Linear Resources'
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our April 2026 RCAS meeting on Sunday\, April 19 at 2:00 PM at Oaklands Mansion Event Hall\, 901 N. Maney Ave.\, Murfreesboro\, TN. We are excited to be hosting a special presentation by award-winning historian Robbie D. Jones\, M.A\, entitled “‘We’re Gonna March’: Civil Rights March Routes as Liner Resources.” This research and documentation examines historic roadways in several states.\n\nIn Mr. Jones words: In the 1950s and 60s\, Americans took to the streets to protest inequality as part of the Civil Rights Movement. In the fight for equal rights\, march routes served as battlefields\, often bloody and sometimes deadly. Armies of protestors risked their freedom and their lives in small towns\, big cities\, and along rural highways. The birthplace of revolutions\, many Americans consider these march routes as sacred ground. This presentation will share information on how to better identify\, document\, and evaluate march routes as cultural landscape sites and linear transportation resources worthy of preservation and commemoration. Case studies include marches in Alabama\, California\, Kentucky\, Maryland\, New York\, and Tennessee.\nOur meetings are free and open to the public. Doors open at 1:30PM with refreshments. See you there!
